"Excellent scratcher" 2010-10-12
By N'sphere (The Big Apple)
My mom's HUGE (22-pound) cat likes this almost as much as the Bergan Turbo Scratcher. It's fairly well made, though it does have to be tightened fairly often or its base (which is two separate pieces) shifts around. We put it in a corner, but even when it's in the middle of the room, he can't knock it over (and considering that he's the size of Cleveland, that's pretty amazing).

Note: When he first started to use it, there were strands and bits of the scratching surface littering the floor, that had to be vacuumed up--but after awhile, that seemed to go away....
I might still get the perch that goes on top of it, I think the cat might like it--that is, if he can drag his fat ass up there.... ;)

"SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post - LOVE IT!" 2010-10-09
By Cocoa Puff (New York, NY)
I have a very large cat. The problem I have had with other scratching posts is that they would fall over when he used them. I have not had that problem with this product. My cat can get a full stretch on the post without the unit falling down, and he loves it!

In addition, it's easy to assemble and sturdy.

The current price of [...] is slightly less than what I paid for it @ [...]. I researched this item for 2 months. Even at the price I paid, no other retailer could beat this price b/c they charge at least $16.00 for shipping.

"Cat loves it and so do I" 2010-10-03
By Skaiya
I am a first-time cat owner, so I have not bought any other cat scratching posts to compare this scratching post with, but I am glad I made this purchase for several reasons.

First, and most obviously, I love this post because but my cat uses this it all of the time. I didn't have to train him to use it, since he likes to scratch things (my laundry basket is another favorite of his) but I do reinforce his scratching behavior at THIS post by feeding him treats when he sits on top of the post, and stuffing small dry treats into the two seams on each side of the post (which causes him to cling to the post as he tries to dig the treat out with his little teeth). Interestingly, I got him this post when he was 6 months old, before he was showing any significant scratching behavior, and he has yet to scratch up any of my furniture other than the laundry basket, which is ok by me.

Second, I love this scratching post because it keeps his claws CLEAN. He doesn't scratch me often or on purpose, but sometimes, we will get a little too excited chasing after the string/toy/ribbon and pounce on the hand pulling the string/toy/ribbon. Before I got the post, the scratch(es) would inflame and be itchy for days. Now that he has the post, his occasional scratches don't get gross.

Third, the post is very well made. It is pretty heavy, so my cat can't tip it over or push it around as he's scratching (he's about 9.5 pounds), even on our wooden floors. The plant fiber that it's made out of also appeals to my cat, and stands up to his constant use.

Overall, I recommend this scratching post to anyone who is looking for a sturdy, heavy duty, large-but-not-too-large scratching post (I can hear him using the scratching post right now).

"Smile with joy as your cats sink their claws into this :)" 2010-10-03
By John Steffes (Maine, USA)
Like many here I was hesitant about spending a considerable amount of money for a product I didn't know would last or even if my cats would like. Once the price dropped to $50.61 with, and this was very important, free shipping, I bought it (this thing is quite heavy).

I have two cats: Peanut is a bob-tailed calico (f) and Socks is a large butterscotch tabby (m). Socks took to this scratching post right off and never looked back. At over 15 lbs he is a relatively big cat and very strong. He like to sinks his front claws into the very top of the post then pull hard, stretching his back in the process. I mention this because I was concerned about whether this post would tip over (he tipped over a previous post I had but thankfully cleared out of its way before it fell over).

Peanut took a bit longer (about a week) to acclimate herself to it. At first she actually seemed rather disinterested but once she took to it she doesn't go to anything else, and boy does she like to claw at things. Like the picture you see in the advertisement, she grabs the post with her front paws then climbs with both front and rear, as if it were a tree. The funniest thing is that she'll climb up towards the top, tilt her head back and look sideways (with her eyes bulging and pupils dilated), then jump and run off. I never fail to laugh when she does it. Great entertainment!

It's been about three months since I purchased this scratching post and though my cats have mauled at it several times daily everyday since then, it hasn't shown much wear. For comparison, I previously had a door-type scratching post (w/catnip pouch). Socks used it but Peanut didn't. And even though Socks used it, it wasn't enough interesting to keep him from scratching elsewhere. Worst of all, by one month he had the thing in shreds.

I know this is a rather long, detailed review. While it's easy to write a critical review, this one took time. I wrote this because when I was searching for a scratching post these are the very concerns I had. As with any pet product/toy, there's no iron-clad guarantee that your pet will like it. But in all fairness give your cats some time (a week or two) to see if they like this post. If they do I think that both you and them will be very grateful for a sturdy and fun product.

My cats love this post. The reviews were on spot. I would highly recommend this post. The quality is excellent, and best of all, the cats agree. They use it all the time instead of household items.
